Starting in late 2003, MAW actors, John Clevenger,
Mike Morrow, Robin Wood, and Terry McGovern, along with guest actor,
Sarah Kliban began filming WILL WORK.
“
I’ve always loved silent films. And I’ve always loved
the corny premise of switched identities. It started with ‘The
Prince and the Pauper,’ and there’s been about a hundred
adult versions of switched identity premises since then. It’s
like 'When Doppelganger’s Collide!’ says writer-director,
Terry McGovern.
The name of the film company pretty much explains how it was shot.
Total guerilla style. No permits. No permission. (Except for the
law office and the beauty shop). And no problems of any kind. Truly
amazing!
Robin Wood (Cornelius Farquard and Tom Truelove) has been a member
of The Marin Actors’ Workshop for a number of years and is
very fond of his bushy beard. But he was willing to sacrifice it—most
of it, anyway—for the movie.
Sarah Kliban is not only a brilliant comedic actor, but also a casting
director in San Francisco. In fact, she was concerned about not auditioning. "Everybody
auditions. Everybody!” Not in this case. We knew she’d
be perfect.
John Clevenger and Mike Morrow, likewise MAW members, really got
into the spirit of shooting whenever and wherever time and opportunity
presented themselves.
Cameraman Anthony McGovern also made himself available for these
sneaky setups and shots. “I loved it,” he said. “We’d
see a place we wanted to shoot, we just put the camera down. That
was the setup. Then we’d shoot. Almost always just one take.
That was the shot. Then we got the hell out of there!

WILL WORK won the 2004 Alameda Film Festival for Best Comedy. Four
years later, there are plans for MAW to venture into the wonderful
world of webisodes. We’re going to launch a weekly streaming
video story on the web. Actors will shoot, light, write and act in
these stories.
If you’d like to join us, I highly recommend that you live
nearby, unless using the family jet helicopter is no problem. We’re
in San Rafael, California, just north of San Francisco. Our main
class, the scene class, meets on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings
at the West End Playhouse, 1554 Fourth Street.
If you’d like to audit those classes, just call us at
